The GDBA service is not great - I have been a guide dog owner for 27 years,
and have sent my last dog back after 8 months, as he was completely
incompatible for me, and the complete opposite to what I had stated as my
preference for a dog. For the first time in my life, I am using a long Kane,
and actually enjoying doing so, something I thought would never be the
case - guide dog mobility is not all it's cracked up to be, and there's a
lot to be said about the poor obedience training the dogs receive from some
puppy walkers! This is my only response on this subject, as it is on the
wrong list, not that I could ever get subscribed to the guide dog list when
I wanted to be, so how good is that!?

John, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a friend of mine waited over
two years for her dog. She's totally blind too and by the time she did
eventually get her dog, she'd totally lost her confidence to travel on her
own and it took a while to come back again. This is really unacceptable.
How can someone who has had pretty good independence for possibly ten years
suddenly be left floundering and reliant on others for two years. I don't
know what the answer is except that waiting times will have to shorten
considerably if GDBA is to provide any sort of acceptable service.
