I thought this was the case, but other's seem to say differently. I'll have
a play around and see what happens.

In a word, yes. I'm sure you know this already, but when you do this, you're
just deleting the shortcut on the Desktop associated with the item. Any
other references to it, and the actual item itself will remain intact. HTH
