Catherine could you not consider getting the RNIB computer volunteers to have a look?

Hi,

Thanks, I'll look into the possibility of a netbook too. I forgot to
say--another important thing to me is, ideally to have a ps2 slot and
serial port which I guess will narrow down what I can buy quite a
lot.

Regarding fixing my current laptop, well I don't know what caused the
problem but it says a certain file is missing or corrupt and windows
needs repairing; I don't understand how to use the repair part of the
windows CD because when I try and use it it gives instructions on how
to exit the repair console but according to the person reading for me
it doesn't say how to continue with it. If I try to reinstal windows
it gets to the point where it lists the drives, but the list is full
of things saying "unknown, there is no disk". Sometimes it also
interrupts the process with a "fatal error" type mdssage, windows has
shut down to protect my system or somesuch. I have antivirus and
antispyware solutions installed. This happened last time and I got it
fixed but it cost me and the guy never told me what the problem
actually was. So I don't know what the pqoblem is but I've had
enough; I can't keep throwing money at it and it's time to start
afresh with a new system.

Hi, I use Vista and love it. There is still some old hardware that isn't
supported by Vista, but not sure about your hardware. However I would have

thought anything less than two or three years old would work with it, but
can't be sure.

Your talking of buying a new laptop because of the probelms with your old one. However I would try and find out whether it is a hardware or software

issue as it may be something easy enough to fix if it's software, and save

you having to buy a new one. There is little point in buying a new one and

putting exactly the same software on it, and going to the same sites, and
for example getting a virus and ending up where you are now.

What went wrong with your current PC?

If your going to buy a new one, a netbook is currently looking like a good

option instead of a laptop. They are laptops but much smaller, and the
specification at the moment don't vary a great deal between man ufacturers

, other than storage. Some have hard drives, others have flash drives with

only something like6GB of storage. However this is fine as with a netbook the intention would be to store data on external storage. You can get them

with large hard drives though, such as the Samsung NC10 which has been
talked about on the email lists a bit lately. You can get that with 2GB of

RAM and a 160 GB hard drive.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

My laptop has been struck down with some mysterious corruption or who
knows what problem for the second time in less than a year and so I've
decided it's time to buy a new one. I wonder if people could help me
with a few questions. I'm on my Braillenote with dialup at the moment so

can't do much research, but I can use e-mail.

Firstly, is it still possible to buy anything with Windows XP on it and
is there any logical reason why I would want to? Are there hardware
compatibility issues with Vista? I have an Epson Perfection 1650 scanner

and an HP Deskjet 460 printer and would really rather not have to buy new

ones. I assume only JAWS Pro will work on Vista? I'm pretty sure I have

JAWS pro and not the other one but how can I find out? It doesn't say in
braille on the CD case--will it say in print? And if it's not the
professional edition how much is buying the professional edition going to

set me back? Can MS Office 2003 be installed on Vista? I also use
Replay AV recording software. If anyone here uses it do you know if they

have a version for Vista?

Does anyone recommend any particular makes or models? And if so why?

Regarding shops, I know people hate PC world and I certainly don't rate
them myself. But I need to get a new laptop ASAP and there's a PC World in my town with long opening hours. If I know exactly what I want to buy

before I go in there is there any reason to avoid PC World? Do people
recommend any other particular shops which have stores nationwide (if
you're feeling particularly kind you could tell me whether they have a
shop near Colchester, Chelmsford, Ipswich or Norwich).
anything people think I need to think about I haven't already mentioned?
I plan to use the computer for average wordprocessing, spreadsheets,
browsing, k1000 and a bit of stream capturing and sound editing.

Thanks for any help you can give,
Catherine
