Postdoc Participatory Scenarios for Renewable Energy Transition in Indonesia
We are searching for a postdoc to work on the renewable energy transition in
Indonesia in an international collaborative project on regional renewable
energy planning and transition.
Job description
Central in the project is the question how a combination of two Indonesian
islands – Kalimantan and Bali – can make the transition to renewable energy.
The project will on the one hand explore the technical and economic feasibility
of various renewable energy sources and on the other hand develop renewable
energy scenarios and implementation pathways that can count on support by major
regional and national stakeholders. The project is a collaboration between the
Institute of Technology Bandung and Delft University of Technology and funded
by national research councils in Indonesia and The Netherlands via the Merian
Fund. At TU Delft the work is done at the Faculty of Technology, Policy,
Management, while the Department of Water Management from the faculty of Civil
Engineering and Geosciences is also involved.
At TU Delft research will be conducted on (i) techno-economic assessment of
renewable energy sources and regional system integration, as well as (ii)
making participatory renewable energy scenarios, using co-creation and
co-production methods as well as backcasting and developing implementation
pathways and evaluating research outcomes and research impacts based on a
developed Theory of Change, for which we seek a talented PhD student and an
excellent postdoc, respectively. Both should combine high level academic
qualities with interest and knowledge of Indonesia and the willingness to learn
the Indonesian language.
The work of the postdoc consists of:
* Institutional and stakeholder analysis of the current Indonesian energy
system and regime
* Refining and conducting a participatory backcasting scenario and pathway
methodology to be conducted in Indonesia to develop renewable energy scenarios
for the islands of Kalimantan and Bali using a co-creation approach
* Defining possible pathways, and identifying conditions and implications
of those pathways
* Refining the implementation/societal change theory for the project as
starting point for the evaluation of learning among stakeholders in line with
the proposed theory of change, as well as identifying enablers and conditions
for endorsement
* Organising and conducting knowledge sharing, training and capacity
building as part of the dissemination of the project, as well as an
co-organising an international workshop and a final international symposium
* Contributions to relevant courses and supervisions of relevant master
thesis projects
* Collaboration with the senior staff involved in the project, most notably Dr
Jaco Quist and Professor Kornelis Blok, as well as with the PhD student in the
project.
Department
The postdoc will be positioned in the Engineering Systems and Services (ESS)
department in the Energy & Industry group. The core activity of the department
is to model, understand, forecast, and shape emerging technological innovations
and user patterns in the increasingly interconnected sectors of energy,
industry, mobility and ICT; and use these insights for improved design,
regulation and operation of such engineering systems. ESS aims to contribute to
the scholarly debate at the highest international level, and is rooted in both
engineering and social sciences. The Energy & Industry groups works on the
energy transition and on the transition to a sustinable industry and a Circular
Economy.
Requirements
* A (nearly) completed PhD relevant for the position in a relevant
interdisciplinary field like Transition and Innovation Studies, Sustainability
Studies, Energy Science, System Engineering, Governance & Policy Analysis or
another relevant PhD qualification.
* Experience/knowledge of qualitative, quantitative and participatory
methods
* Experience and track record in stakeholder involvement, participatory
energy scenarios & futures, and (research or visioning) impact evaluation, or
energy transition/pathway evaluations
* Knowledge of energy systems and governance of energy transitions and
energy policies
* Prepared to do considerable field work in Indonesia
* Knowledge of the Indonesian context, or experience in other Asian
countries is an advantage, willingness to learn some Indonesian is appreciated
* Excellent research and academic reflection skills
* Excellent command of written and spoken English
