Communications Intern

*Internship Summary*

We are looking for an energetic, self-directed, and organized
Communications Intern. Working closely with the Associate Director for
Communications and the Online Organizing & Outreach Coordinator, the person
in this position will assist in implementation and planning to support
Advocates for Youth’s communications strategy during Spring Semester 2014.
Through purposeful, authentic, and meaningful projects and tasks, the
Communications Intern will gain essential skills in traditional and digital
media and deepen understanding of strategic growth functions in the
non-profit sector.

The Communications Intern duties may include, but aren’t limited to: media
monitoring, social media engagement, making pitch calls to media, database
management, research, and proofreading and editing work. Administrative
duties include preparing marketing and media packets, copying, distributing
materials, and other office duties.

This internship is open to college students, recent graduates, and graduate
students. Women, minorities, and people from other underrepresented groups
are encouraged to apply. This is a part-time, paid internship with flexible
hours (average 20 hours per week, working 3 days a week, plus event days).
Paid hourly, $10/hour.

*Requirements Include*

   - Interest in communications, social media, public relations, online
   organizing, event planning, or non-profits as a career
   - Passionate about sexual health and reproductive rights issue such as
   birth control, HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ issues, abortion, comprehensive sex
   education, etc.
   - Excellent written and verbal communication skills
   - Strong attention to detail; ability to organize and prioritize work to
   meet concurrent deadlines
   - A strong work ethic and can-do attitude
   - Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and as
   part of a team
   - Flexibility and resourcefulness
   - A passion for Advocates for Youth’s mission
   - Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Word, Excel,
   PowerPoint, and Outlook
   - Digital design/ graphic design skills is a plus, but not necessary
   - A sense of humor!

*Responsibilities Include*

   - Assisting with various aspects of ongoing Communications Department
   responsibilities
   - Drafting press releases and op-eds
   - Coordinating events, including RSVP management and logistics
   - Conducting outreach to partner organizations, VIPs, and media
   - Assisting the Associate Director of Communications with maximizing
   press opportunities
   - Assisting the Online Organizing & Outreach Coordinator with social
   media posting and advertising
   - Other relevant projects, as assigned

January 6 through late April or early May 2014
