This morning I got out to Gerrish Valley Rd and Mt Richmond Rd northwest of
Yamhill, OR 8:30 - 12:30. I found several FOY birds:
The Gerrish Valley portion of this route was surprisingly quiet. The usual
mineral spring where ODF&W counts Band-tailed Pigeons had no pigeons. The
straight stretch of road had few species. On my Android phone my Google
maps could not pull up a satellite view of the new-to-me ponds. I couldn't
even pull up the road further on - the wonders of modern technology.
As I began to ascend toward the ridge I found my first FOY* bird:
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT* called and chattered from the riparian strip in the
valley. As I neared the top, in more wooded and brushy habitat I heard
another chat.
I also heard a SWAINSON'S THRUSH* that exchanged its water-drop "pwit" with
me.
eBird was kind enough to let me select "NW Gerrish Valley Rd" for my first
checklist.
At the top I started a new checklist on Mt Richmond Rd.
Near the first mailboxes a MacGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER* called a lot from hiding.
Further south I was able to actually see another bird.
Further on, I found a LAZULI BUNTING singing from a semi-hidden perch
(aren't they all?) in a big-leaf maple.
Darned eBird would not let me enter "NW Richmond Rd" from my phone on the
road. It would not let me enter it when I got home. I had to enter Gerrish
Valley and save it. Then I could access the checklist on my home computer
and edit i.e. change the name.
Why can't this be fixed???? It's maddening. I'm at location X, Road Y. I
know where I am. Google knows where I am. My phone knows where I am. Why
can't I tell eBird, "I'm at _________" and enter the location of the
checklist ???
