I have managed to have 3 video meetings with John over the last two days.
The children joined me for two of them and, despite the girls crying
through most of the first, there has been positive news.
At the first video meeting, John had had his breathing tubes and oxygen
mask removed, which meant he could speak - and knew quite a few things. He
took ages to wake up and then at least another 30 seconds to look at the
screen and realise that he was looking at 4 very eager faces. Once he had
his eyes open enough to focus he said, 'Hello family'.
We had decided to speak to him one at a time and he interjected with a few
comments here and there. Quite often, his answer was fairly vague - giving
an answer that would be safe, even though he hadn't really grasped what was
being said.
E.g. We told him how hard Jonas had worked on some mock exams for us and
he replied,'Good man, good man'. And, we told him that the children were
going to go camping for a couple of nights with Steph and Chris and he
said, 'That sounds great' - I'm not sure he knew exactly what we had just
said, but that answer fitted the bill. Because the girls were upset, he
tried to stroke the screen to calm them and then he did a couple of funny
things to make them laugh - poking out his tongue and flicking the Vs when
the nurse wasn't looking. Either that, or he has developed tourette's.
He can move his right arm a lot now but has pulled out some of his tubes,
so they have tied huge mittens on to him (they look more like small
pillows). His left side has moved for definite today - fingers, toes and he
could bend his knee - but is very weak compared to the other side. They had
organised surgery for yesterday to put his bit of skull back in, but his
chest infection and temperature reared their ugly heads again and this has
postponed it for a few days. On the video call tonight, I could see that
the top left side of his head is caved in, meaning that the swelling has
started to go down at last.
Today, the meeting wasn't so great. He had had physio and was knackered.
He really didn't want to wake up and chat. I tried again tonight and he was
a bit better but still not very chatty. He was keen to stay looking at the
screen even when conversation ran out. He told me twice that he is in
Wilton rather than Southampton so is very confused and is still in a
post-serious-traumatic-amnesia phase, meaning that he can't retain info for
very long and will forget our meeting almost as soon as it is over.
