Carol will testify , I approach gardening ( preferably with some sort of
power tool in hand ) with equal amounts of enthusiasm and ignorance. I
think I do a great job but Jan may be a few plants down !

Feel free to skim read this. I suspect updates will slow down now as I am
probably not allowed to visit as often.
This is what I thought was different today from Thursday and Friday.
- He's off the ventilator and breathing completely by himself. He had an
oxygen mask which was very noisy, so not sure how much he could hear me.
- His hand squeeze had a bit of power.
- He was awake when I got there and managed to have at least one eye, at
least half open on and off for at least half an hour. Left eye is still
sluggish and not focusing as well.
- He's moving his right forearm a lot more than previously. He could reach
up to my face and even put his hand in my hair and rubbed it (I've waited
33 years for a bit of romance!)
- When I was trying to manipulate the fingers on his left hand to stop
them getting stuck in a claw position, he put his right hand on my arm and
gave me a bit of a rub - as if to say he understood and wanted to comfort
me.
- He could lift his head a little off the pillow and tried to move his
position for himself - but never managed due to the left side not working.
- He can just about nod and shake his head so I asked a few questions ...
1. Did he know who I was? Nod and squeeze of hand.
2. I thought he felt cold and his sheet was down towards his middle so I
pulled it up saying...
"We don't want all of these nurses ogling your chest, do we?" to which he
nodded! So I left it down.
3. I was quiet towards the end of my visit and just held his hand while he
had his eyes closed. I said sorry that I was quiet, but he's heard my news
and it might be boring. Then I thought, what a silly thing to say to
someone who's been in a coma for 11 days and so I said, "But it probably
isn't boring to you, is it?" This time he shook his head, but still had
eyes closed.
Not sure what to read into this. Either he really does understand and he's
being lovely/cheeky/lovely depending on the question, or he is only half
there and just hears the inflection in my voice and thinks, uh-oh she's
asked a question. Which sort of head movement should I do? 50:50 chance of
it being the right one.
Slightly sad is the news that he still isn't moving the left side at all.
Maybe the toe movement yesterday was imagined - easy to do. Also, now he is
less likely to die, I think I am off the emergency list and am now on the
3x a week. Not sure if I'll be allowed to go tomorrow.
