I rode my 12 speed from Westbrook to Raymond up the River Road to 302 to
Raymond back in 1994. It took me about an hour and a half.
That was a really scary ride.

Wider shoulders would certainly make it more comfortable for everyone when
bicyclists or pedestrians are present. Note that to meet standards for bicycle
travel, they would need to be at least 4 feet wide. But paradoxically, wider
roads are known to encourage more speeding than narrow roads, because wider
roads make it feel like it's safer to go faster, especially on straightaways
with few intersections. So that's always a difficult tradeoff to consider. For
a rural section like that, it might be worth the extra shoulder space, for
pedestrians as well as cyclists. It's long been DOT policy to add paved
shoulders when the Average Daily Traffic (ADT) is > 3000 (I think), but I don't
know if a standard width is defined in that policy, nor if that road meets the
ADT threshold.

If the bulk of Stroudwater Street from the Turnpike Overpass up to just before
the Middle School Driveway is ever rebuilt,
It, first, will become a speedway and second,
Appropriate Wider Shoulders will be required, in comparison to what is a
" Shoulder " in name only at the present time.

Thanks for giving him a lot of space, and setting that good example for the
drivers behind you. (They might not have even seen him in front of you.)

I was on the way to the Concord Coach Bus Station to see two friends off to NYC
this morning. As I came down Stroudwater Street towards the long driveway to
the Randall Farm at 5:46 AM, my headlights shined on the rear wheel of a
Bicycle on the shoulder of the street.
The Bicyclist had NO Reflective Clothing and was wearing Dark Clothing. I did
not see any kind of Reflective decals on the Bicycle itself. No Wheel Generator
operated lights. I was able to move wide Left and pass him with plenty of
space as there was no oncoming traffic. At least one or two vehicles were
behind me.
