Because scuds are aquatic, I was wondering the same thing, where/how would be
robins be finding scuds? Is it possible that these critters were isopods, many
of which are terrestrial ,rather than scuds, which are strictly aquatic. They
do look superficially similar.

Semi-interesting scud factoid. Before their populations crashed, a deep-water
L Michigan amphipod, Diporeia hoyi, was a mainstay in the diets of long-tailed
ducks and many fishes.
