Here's a summary of where I've been and what I've seen the past several days.
Tuesday: Usually I hear only one barred owl from my neighbor's woods, but
today they had a duet. Sounded as though they were quite a ways away from one
another.
Wednesday: Today I embarked on my annual western trip. First stop was
Thompson Prairie W of Madison. After about 10 minutes I spotted my target
bird, upland sandpiper, walking along the road. I drove down to where I had
seen it and got scope views of a pr walking in one of last year's picked corn
fields. Then I went to Gov Dodge SP only to find out that all state parks are
closed on Wednesdays....oops. I continued on to Wyalusing SP, which , as
expected, was also closed. I tried a few other spots in the area but found
nothing of interest except for prothonatory warbler at Bagley Bottoms. At dusk
I drove to Gran Grae Rd to listen for whip-poor-wills. I made 13 stops between
Rt 60 and Wacauda (sp?) Rd and heard whips at 7 of the stops.
Thursday: The park was supposed to open at 0600 so I was there a few minutes
before then. By 0630 it still hadn't opened. At about 0625 a canoer from
Racine stopped. At 0635 I figured we had waited long enough so with the
canoer's help we moved one of the barricades and off we went. First I went to
the boat ramp at the bottom of Long Valley Rd. Here were a couple of
cooperative cerulean warblers. Then I went to the small parking area on the
abandoned road that used to go to Homestead Picnic area. About 100 yds off
Long Valley Rd I got KY warbler. I tried for yellow-throated warbler at 2
spots but dipped at both. I talked to several people who were looking for it
but no one I talked to had found it. I tried the campground on the ridge and
found more cerulean warblers. Then I spent a couple of hrs walking the lower
half of Long Valley Rd before finally finding a pr of Acadian flycatchers.
Last stop was Gov Dodge SP where I found LA waterthrush.
Today: There was a RN phalarope in the pond that is at the SW corner of the
intersection of CTH A and US 151 in Dodge Co. Very little at the Jersey Rd
ponds. Ziegler Park in Mayville was dead. There were a few warblers in the
small woodlot on my farm property but nothing exciting. The barred owls were
calling again from my neighbor's woods but only one this time.
I'm at 31 warblers for the season but those that remain are all very difficult
to find and require more luck than anything else.
