A nice number of us started at Bay Beach Sanctuary for the 2nd "warbler" walk.
It was much quieter than Sat's walk. While 65 species were tallied, the number
of individuals was way down. Only 5 warbler species (nothing new from Sat),
only 2 thrushes, a Blue-headed Vireo, etc. Best were (FOY for many observers)
Red-headed WP, 3 Green Herons and a Rose-br. Grosbeak. A Horned Grebe was on
the pond.
I decided to check along the lake front starting at Manitowoc. The impoundment
was very quiet---only Caspian and Common Terns---no shorebirds.
The Kingfisher Farm was very productive. An Eastern Kingbird was foraging for
insects by the parking lot. A Baltimore Oriole was coming to the feeders and a
Lincoln's Sparrow accompanied other sparrows (total of 8 sparrow species
present). These three were (FOY) for me.
Fischer Creek CP was quiet.
Sheboygan was so-so! Single adult Glaucous and Great Black-backed Gulls were
at North Pt, until a photographer scared them. Where they had 123 Willets last
evening two were still present. At the end of Indiana Ave I looked for the
Mockingbird searching all the shrubs and trees. Nothing, probably due to the
grass being cut. However as I returned to my vehicle I thought I heard it
calling. As I started to leave it flew from the adjacent pine across the road
to other trees and shrubs. A pleasant surprise.
Kohler SP was rather quiet.
Harrington Beach SP was absurdly quiet!
I checked Church Rd in Fond du Lac county on the way home. Nothing but 3 Great
Egrets. There is very limited water here.
For the day 94 species. It was great birding with the group at Bay Beach and
enjoying the nice, sunny weather, and the nice birds at Kingfisher Farm and
Sheboygan.
