Some have asked if this is a record year for the number of Varied Thrush sightings. My yearly records go back to 1980. In that time period the record high in one year for Varied Thrush was 14 (set in both 1993 and 2005). This would be the number of Varied Thrush sightings in the period Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 of any given year. Excluded from the total would be any Varied Thrush found in December of the previous year and then remaining through the winter of the count year. Thus any Varied Thrush first found in December of 2012 and continuing to be found in Jan. and Feb. of 2013 would not be eligible. But thrushes showing in November and December of 2013 would count. Following is a graph of Varied Thrush encounters for the years 1980-2012. -- Bob Domagalski, St. Nazianz 69.
