This morning there was a surprising variety of shorebirds at Van Patten Rd, although the number of birds continues to decrease due to the dry weather. (We have not had rain in almost 2-3 weeks.) A total of 13 species were seen that included 3 Black-bellied and 1 Am Golden Plover (took off and headed south almost immediately), only 1 Semip Plover, 25 Killdeer, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 5 Lesser Yellowlegs, 10+ Semip. and 25+ Least Sandpipers, 5 Baird's Sandpipers, 1 Pectoral Sandpiper, 2 Stilt Sandpipers, 10+ Wilson's Snipes. Mack WA continues amazingly quiet. Combined today and last Sat I have seen one bird there total, a Mourning Dove. This usually has good migrants during late Aug and the first half of Sept. So far there has been only one good day, with the Phil Vireo and Selasphorus hummer. Apparently due to the lack of fronts and rain, the passerines are going straight through overnight. Here is hoping Sept brings a change in this pattern. However the Nat. Weather Bureau has indicated that Sept thru Nov is suppose to be above normal temps for this part of the country. That probably means below on precipitation, and we are really dry already.
