There is a nice mix of ducks on the Rhinelander Flowage just south of McNaughton (NW of Rhinelander). The real prize today was an adult male SURF SCOTER in breeding plumage associating with Goldeneye and Bufflehead. The best vantage point for this group of ducks is from the boat landing on Apperson Dr. on the south side of the flowage. Another good vantage point is from the parking lot for the Supper Club on Hwy 47 but the Scoter is too far east to be seen from here. There were good numbers of Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Ring-neckeds and modest numbers of Wigeon, Gadwall, Blue-winged Teal, Black Duck, and Shoveler. Three Trumpeter Swans were also present-- best seen from the Apperson Dr boat landing. The woods are starting to come alive with GC Kinglets and Creepers everywhere, plentiful Sapsuckers and singing Winter Wrens, and a few Yellow-rumped and Pine Warblers. Crossbills of both species seem to be moving around quite a bit and rather easy to detect flying over. Nice to see some waterfowl in the north woods!
