I drove a 1/2 hour loop to the west of Spring Green around midday today and had a few nice sightings (for the middle of February). Along Hwy JJ, just west of the intersection with Hwy G, a single SANDHILL CRANE was present. This crane has been on the ice of a drainage ditch in this location since Monday. Further west on Hwy JJ, between Dyke and Peck roads, there is a hillside to the north of JJ that is covered in Red Ceders which are full of berries. This hillside has been quite good all winter, and today some of the birds included, 120 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 15 BLUEBIRDS, a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, a PURPLE FINCH, and a ROBIN, along with good numbers of more typical winter species. In the fields near the intersection of Hwy JJ and Peck Road there were several Horned Larks and 4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. My last stop was Bakken's Pond which now has some open water and a TRUMPETER SWAN was present along with a some Mallards and Geese.
