Hi,

With the recent sighting of a Varied Thrush in eastern Marathon County, I have
been back channeled by several birders asking for updates on two other good
birds seen in recent weeks here in my home county. These two birds are the
Spotted Towhee in Rib Mountain, and the Baltimore Oriole in Marathon City.

So this morning I took a drive out to Marathon City, just west of the Wausau
area, to look first for the Baltimore Oriole that was first sighted back in
mid-November. As soon as I pulled up along the road side to view the feeders, I
saw the oriole right away sitting on one of the feeders. This bird can be found
by taking the State Hwy 107 exit off of State Highway 29 at Marathon City.
Drive south on Hwy 107 towards Marathon City and travel about 1/2 mile down the
road to North Ridge Road, and turn left (east) here. Travel on North Ridge Road
(which is a dead end road) for maybe two city blocks until you see where the
road makes a sharp bend to the left (north). Stop about 100 feet or so just
before this sharp turn and look in the backyard on the south side of the road.
Find all the feeders and this is the Spot. Connie and Gary are the home owners.
You can easily see the feeders from your car.

Next I went for the Spotted Towhee in Rib Mountain, and again just as I pulled
up, I saw this bird sitting in a bush on the back corner of the house next door
to the east. It soon flew over to the front yard feeders of the house who first
reported this bird, and landed on the ground to feed in the company of juncos
and goldfinches. And again, I was sitting in my car viewing this bird! This
bird is coming to 2301 Nuthatch Lane in Rib Mountain (Wausau address on your
GPS). Today was the quickest that I saw this bird. The other few times I saw
this bird, I had to wait around awhile for it to show up. It does travel around
the neighborhood with the juncos and cardinals. Also, while I was viewing this
bird today, on several occasions it would fly to some bushes under the front
window of this house, so be sure to look in here as well. The home owners here
are Gary and Ruth.

Good luck if you try for any of these birds, and post your results.
