Hello all, Although I was not the observer and this wasn't in Wisconsin I think this can be beneficial for us. My parents in Urbana, Illinois called today asking me to help identify some new birds at their bird bath; turns out they had 6 RED CROSSBILLS! The reason I'm sharing is because the Crossbills weren't eating pine cones but were eating sweet gum balls from the tree across the street. I heard someone mention once that Crossbills will do that, but didn't pay much attention. If anyone has any sweet gum trees, keep your eyes open! And if Crossbills are stopping off in Central Illinois, they could visit anywhere in Wisconsin this winter!
