Although known as a fall hotspot for shorebirds, the shorebird habitat on Rainbow Flowage (just east of Lake Tomahawk) is pretty good right now. Plenty of small sand spits and large muddy and sandy edges in areas. The highlight late this afternoon was a WILLET seen from the Oxbow Rd dead end. Not many other shorebirds yet except Yellowlegs. It sounds like White Pelicans were migrating in the northland today because there was a group of 11 here as well as Nancy Richmond's group on Pelican Lake. There has been a decent mix of divers and dabblers present as well ever since ice off about a week and a half ago. For those not familiar with the flowage, the best access is from Oxbow Rd on the NE end, Swamp Creek Rd on the East side, Hwys D and E near the dam on the south end, and Rainbow Lake Rd on the west side. I recommend checking it out if you're in the area.
