I carry my scope and binoculars on in a backpack or small duffel bag. Putting them in their case if you have one helps too. They have always been fine in the overhead. The last few times I brought my tripod I carried on. In my earlier trips I always put the tripod in a suitcase protected by clothes. Having the backpack and tripod as carry on items has worked fine without a hassle. I know shortly after 911 a birding friend was not allowed to carry on a tripod because it could be used "like a club". Fortunately I haven't heard of any recent nonsense. I know that my scope would be invaluable on the trip, but I am wary of risking it on the plane flight. What advice do people have on carrying scopes on airplanes? Obviously I could carry the scope as a carry-on, but what about the tripod? Should I put the scope in the overhead or under the seat? Any tips would be much appreciated.
