This is the birding hotline report of the Madison Audubon Society for
Saturday, January 29th.

Two TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRES greeted the two intrepid birders who hiked
up to the East Bluff of Devil’s Lake SP from the north side of the
park. The snow made the walking difficult, so if you plan to try for
the Solitaires from the north end of the park, plan enough time.

The adult HARRIS’S SPARROW has been seen 38 yards north of a little
bridge on Stony Creek Road on the east side of Jefferson County.
Stony Creek Road runs north from County B, and is joined in Dane
County by Dane County BB.

Six TUNDRA SWANS were present in Lewis Park in McFarland at the end of
Highland. In a few weeks Lower Mud Lake will start to open up on the
south end, and it’s worth watching for early waterfowl migrants.

At the Prairie du Sac dam birds found included BUFFLEHEADS, COMMON
GOLDENEYES, COMMON MERGANSERS, the usual wintering BALD EAGLES, and a
NORTHERN FLICKER.

The next birding event is February 18-21, The Great Backyard Bird
Count. Bird watchers of all ages will be counting birds from
Friday-Monday, Feb. 18-21, to create a real-time snapshot of where
birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning
bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day,
or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s
free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds. Watch for more in the
February CAWS or visit http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc/

Good Birding!
