At present, there are 16 valid state records for the Purple Gallinule. It has been nearly 16 years since the last find (a specimen) and better than 26 years since the last gallinule sighting from which state birders might have had an opportunity to observe the bird. Thus, for the majority of birders, the current find has likely been their first chance for this species. In a summer already marked by a number of unusual finds, this adds another to the list. Previous to this sighting, there was but one Wisconsin summer record -- that being on June 15 and 16 in 1977 in Milwaukee. -- Bob Domagalski, Menomonee Falls 1. Sept. 24, 1939 -- Grant; Ben Logan 2.
