Arrived before the full moon set at Buena Vista Grasslands, found 1 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK on Farmer's Rd. that flew north to Swamp Road disturbing a N. SHRIKE, had 2 coyotes nearby. Drove up Townline and back east on Lake Rd. where we had 6 Horned Larks west of King's farm, just northeast of there we found 2 PRAIRE CHICKENS up in a small tree trying to warm up in the rising sunlight. There were a few SNOW BUNTINGS as we met up with the WSO caravan of cars, hopefully they found the Prairie Chickens as they were close. We moved on to Sandhill WLA and Bear Bluff which was very quiet - a few birds at the feeder and by the cranberry bogs a Red Fox and over 40 deer. Being at the right place at the right time is so important in birding and that's what happened on 9th Rd. at Necedah WLR about 4 miles east of Mather, an adult GOLDEN EAGLE soared over the road, beautiful glow in the sunlight. We found only two over-wintering RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS along the very icy roads NW of the Visitor's Center, enjoyed seeing 7 Porcupines. There were several Bald Eagles along the road to Petenwell Dam. Ended with 33 Species.
