This afternoon I went to Port Washington to look for the young male Harlequin
Duck and adult male winter-plumaged Long-tailed Duck that Jim Edlhuber recently
and aptly photographed. I couldn’t find the Long-tailed Duck, but the Harlequin
was in its usual spot near the Mallards south of the pier that goes to the
lighthouse and just east of what once was the parking lot for the recently
demolished Newport Shores restaurant. The white stripes from the front white
facial patch to the sides of the crown are coming in. At one time, many of us
thought this was a female, but Jim’s photos revealed a few white areas that
wouldn’t be seen on a female. If this bird sticks around, it will be
interesting to observe the transition to adult plumage.
I couldn’t bird Coal Dock Park- the wind and blowing snow made for terrible
viewing conditions. Just a small amount of snow had fallen when I headed south
on I43, but already there were 2 cars and 1 pickup truck in the median, and a
jackknifed semi, half in the ditch, and half blocking one lane. Not a great
start to the New Year for those folks.
