I started at Harrington Beach State Park, and besides the common species of
ducks there were dozens of Long-tailed Ducks, most of them quite distant,
but one male flew by fairly close to shore. Also distant were 3 White-winged
Scoters. I'm glad they flew
because I couldn't have identified them that far out without seeing the
secondaries.
Field birds have been hard for me to find this winter, so I was pleased to
find 3 decent-sized flocks of Horned Larks, Snow Buntings,
and Lapland Longspurs, 1 flock in each county along Six Mile Rd. and 1 flock
in Sheboygan County between Six Mile Rd. and Rauwerdink Rd. north of CTH G.
The longspurs were by far the least numerous of the 3 species, but the "G"
flock had at least 8, and the other 2 flocks had at least a few. 2
Rough-legged Hawks and 2 Northern Shrikes and several Kestrels were along
Six Mile Rd.
Kohler-Andrae State Park had no waterfowl on the water but 8 Common Redpolls
were attacking the thistle sock at the entrance station.
The American Wigeon continues along Washington Ave. (STH 28) in the one open
pond on the south side of the road just east of Goodwill. In the river at
the Blue Harbor Resort, I saw a Horned Grebe. A Great Black-backed Gull was
in the area. The Snowy Owl
was perched on the breakwall, in scope view from the south pier. And the
oddity of the day was a Yellow-rumped Warbler, flying out of the rocks near
the beginning of the south pier, then back into the rocks. It repeated this
behavior several times. It seemed like a terribly inhospitable place for a
warbler, but it must have been finding food items deep down in the rock
wall. It was getting dark, so I did not check the point.
