eBird reports from Port Washington Harbor this past weekend indicated a
continuing large number and good variety of birds, so I decided to give it a
try today. I hoped for the Slaty-backed Gull which has eluded me to date,
and since there had been huge numbers of Canada Geese there, Jeremy Meyer's
report of Greater White-fronted Geese made me hope that some might have
joined the Canada Geese there. Today was a different day, however, and bird
numbers were way down. Highlights were Glaucous, Great Black-backed, Lesser
Black-backed, and Iceland Gulls. One of the Ruddy Ducks was starting to
develop some rufous on the breast, and there was a female Long-tailed Duck
in the impounded area at Coal Dock Park. There were very few geese. It was
good to bird with Stuart M., and he indicated that there were many more
interesting gulls north of the harbor, but no Slaty-backed.
I got some lunch in town and moved over to Six Mile Road. East of Six Mile
Road and south of CTH D there were a large number of Canada Geese, so I
began my search. With some difficulty, I spotted 2 Greater White-fronted
Geese. It was good that they were hard to see, because while I was intensely
watching for them to come into view, two personal first-of-year Killdeer
moved into my field of view. I moved over to CTH D where I had a better view
of the Greater White-fronted Geese and saw 4 more (total of six).
I also spotted a female teal, and while female teal are always a challenge
for me, the bird turned to show me the pale line above the femoral patch,
indicating the expected (FOY) Green-Winged Teal. A Northern Shrike continues
at Schwengel WPA (east of Six Mile Rd.) . Many Red-winged Blackbirds were
seen at various locations.
