Northwest Dane County had heavy rains recently, causing many flooded fields. With limited time, yesterday, I was able to check a couple of them along Hwy 60, between Prairie du Sac and Lodi. At the junction of Hwy 60 and Hwy 188 there were mostly gulls, including Bonis, and a few ducks. Not the best for shorebirds. The best area for shorebirds, which has been good in the past, is at Hwy 60 and I believe it is OConnor Road (the next right turn after Fish Lake Road, going toward Lodi). There were at least a dozen shorebirds. But before I could get a good look a huge tractor, which took up both lanes of the narrow road, came toward me. It seemed best to move out of there. This road is not a good place to stop even without tractors. The narrow shoulders drop steeply to ditches filled with water. While stopping along Hwy 60 is not great, it is a better option for this area. Several other flooded fields could be seen along Hwy 60, but I was not able to check them all. So northwest Dane County may be good for shorebirds. Hopefully some of you will find interesting birds to report. Good luck.
