Yesterday the annual Milwaukee and Ozaukee May bird count was held. I'm
honored to have been the compiler of this count since taking over for the
late Mary Donald over 25 years ago.
It was a pleasant day and enough migrants were around for us to find 180
species with several holes or birds seen the day before as typically
happen. Highlights include 30 species of warblers. No rare ones in the
bunch but no misses in this area. Whitnall Park alone reported 27 species
with most of them low along the stream.
Some rare birds were found including the Blue Grosbeak which has apparently
returned to Spirit Lake in Ozaukee County where it was found last summer.
Other unusual finds include a mockingbird, Willets, Whimbrels, American
Golden Plover, Iceland, Great Black-backed and Lesser Black-backed Gulls
and Red-throated Loons.
Thanks to all for helping out and reporting your lists to eBird. Makes my
job much easier. Back in the old days I spent much of the weekend on the
phone checking in everyone to record their lists. My wife (and I) don't
miss that!
Here are some misses for any of you who can help out.
-Weak on Ducks. All we had were Wood, Mallard, BW Teal, Shoveler, Lesser
Scaup, all 3 mergansers and Ruddy.
-Any grebes
-upland sandpiper, snipe
-black tern
-collared dove
-cuckoos and goatsuckers were missed
-Yellow-bellied and acadian flycatcher
-carolina wren
-hermit thrush
-grasshopper sparrow
-dickcissel
-siskin and purple finch
