Mike Wanger reported seeing a single Common Merganser today. I too had a solitary one about a week ago near the Grant Park beach, and thought at the time, that this was quite an early arrival for SE WI. Thought maybe this one had summered here after the particularly brutal winter where hundreds were found starved and deceased or very nearly so on the ice. They stayed south long into the Spring, perhaps to fatten up for the journey north. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Or is this just a bird that wanted to get a head start on Zebra Mussel cleanup?!
