Jim's photo came across fairly dark. My photos (such as they are) show the mantle to be not as dark as in Jim's. The key point, however, which does not show in Jim's photo, is that the wingtips were white, not dark. John Dixon was also concerned about the mantle being darker by a shade or two than the HERGs in the vicinity. Checking Dunn and Howell's Gulls of the Americas when I got home, I'm wondering if this bird is a GBBG X GLGU. The best photos I was able to get are here: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDWcQoo Analysis and feedback are welcome! The mantle color appears to be a dark gray (darker than the nearby Herrings), which would be more expected from a bird with Great Black-backed genes. A "Nelson's Gull" should as light or lighter in mantle color than a Herring. One of highlights was a gull thought to be by Jym and John D a Nelson's - a hybrid Glaucous x Herring Gull. Also present were 5 Glaucous Gulls, 1 Great Black-backed Gull and a Lesser Black-backed Gull. Other species present in the area, an American Kestrel and Horned Grebe. If I have something mislabeled, please let me know, thank you! It was a nice morning to be out among many other birders.
