Others would know more about this than I do, but from a genetic standpoint it 
makes sense for the male to get involved in the dispute at this point in the 
reproductive cycle.  There is an incubating egg and it is past the point to 
produce a new viable egg this season.  This investment is made for this 
reproductive year.
