I returned to Leola Marsh in hopes of seeing some Short Eared Owls. I arrived
around 2:30pm and stayed til dark. I counted 5 rough-tailed hawks, 3 harriers,
2 bald eagles, as well as some ravens, goldfinches, juncos and tree sparrows.
Fun finds were 2 rusty blackbirds and a single prairie chicken which flew up
from a ditch and landed out of sight-- not sure which of us was more startled!
Around 4:15, I first noticed 2 and then 3 SE owls hunting south of Apache
Avenue. After a while, they decided to chase off the rough-legged hawk which
had been sitting for over an hour at the top of a tall tree. They dive-bombed
it several times and eventually it took off.
As I was leaving driving north, I looked back and saw the amazing sunset, and
noticed a pair of SE owls hunting... not sure if they were the same owls, or an
additional pair.
Happy birding to you.
