I spent a couple hours birding with my 19 month old grandson Angelo this
afternoon at Myrick Marsh in LaCrosse. The water is really high, which made
it even more interesting with a very active little boy. I know there were
more birds out there, but these are the ones we saw and he noticed.
Many pairs of Canada Geese. He got to witness two pairs on the trail
fighting over territory.
Canvasbacks
Blue Winged Teal
Coots
Mallards
Displaying Hooded Mergansers
Northern Rough Winged Swallows
Tree Swallows
Song Sparrow
Red Winged Blackbird
Great Blue Heron
We heard at least one Yellow Headed Blackbird in the tangle of stuff to the
west as you head out from the trail on the east. Just couldn't spot it, but
it was definitely in there.

And the only winged creature he calls "bird"...American Robins.

He was doing a decent imitation of the calls of the geese, the RWBB and the
Tree Swallows. Also, though he thought his Fisher Price binoculars were
pretty cool, when he got a look through Grandma's, the FP ones came off and
he dumped them on the trail in hopes of getting his grubby little hands on
mine. Nope. Not ready for those! We also had a number of muskrat
sightings at close range, and amazingly enough, he would stay quiet long
enough to see them.

Including a significant time working on his follow through tossing rocks
into the marsh, we were out there for about two hours. Pretty good for a
little guy on his first real birding trip!
