My daughter and I did some birding at Horicon this past Saturday. I must admit its been a long time since I've been out, and birding with an 8 year old changes things, but we had fun. Lydia thinks coots are cute! We were at Horicon at 5 am and watched the sun come up while listening to the birds calling. In addition to the other sp. already mentioned by others, we had double crested cormorants along Hwy 49, white pelicans in several spots (Hwy 49, boardwalk, Ledge Rd, Main Dike), Gadwall & Redheads along Hwy 49 and the boardwalk. Also on the boardwalk we stood about 3-4 ft below 2 very cute tree swallows sticking their heads out of the nest (wish I had my camera with me). Rosebreasted grosbeak on the auto tour (right by the old dike road). Also heard an Am Bittern while walking the boardwalk - I'm sure he was in the marsh on the left side of the road as you leave the boardwalk area. Thanks to a few of the Madison birders for helping us find some of the shorebirds right away, both on Hwy 49 and the Main Dike.
