With it being open today through Monday I decided to hike the Old Marsh Road this morning. I left the east gate at 6:15 and wasn't far from the car when I had 2 brown thrashers. About 6:45 an immature bald eagle cruised through and stirred things up. There were lots of ducks, geese and sandhill cranes in the air when I saw 4 birds coming from the south that looked different. I got the bins on them as they approached and flew past at maybe 150 yards. In the early morning light at that distance I couldn't see any field marks for which species but their size, flight profile and long downward curved bill left no doubt it was 4 IBIS, FOY. They continued flying north till I lost them, never seeing them land. Shortly after that I heard an American bittern pumping, I always enjoy that. At the wooden bridge I lingered for awhile and saw 4 yellow-rumped warblers, 1 ruby-crowned kinglet, 1 blue-gray gnatcatcher and 1 FOY YELLOW WARBLER. Only shorebird seen was 1 killdeer. Had some yellow-headed blackbirds in the island area, several Forster's terns also. Gate to gate it was a 4 hour walk with 48 species, the highlight being the Ibis of course.
