Drove around on the east side of the Marsh later this afternoon and was enjoyable as always. Although not a lot of species seen was still a nice little variety. I saw horned larks in quite a few locations. Had a lone snow bunting on Rockvale Rd., a kestrel on Hwy TW. Saw a good-sized flock of turkeys running and flushing and flying into a little wooded fence corner. They all huddled together in there as a mature bald eagle flew over but showing no interest in them. On Point Rd. South saw 2 rough-legged hawks, 1 being a dark morph. On Ledge Rd. saw a male harrier and on the big curve on Hwy Z had a flock of common redpolls on the roadside. As I was sitting watching them an owl flushed out of a small wooded area near the road and into another small wooded area farther back, I assume it was either a barred or great horned but didn't get good enough look to tell. Also saw 2 more harriers, 1 male, 1 female but can't recall exactly where. On the way home on Hwy TW had another kestrel and 4 sandhill cranes in a harvested cornfield. At Ledge Rd. and Point Rd. I saw 4 pheasant roosters. I realize these possibly were released birds but they acted wild as I drove up and stopped and they had very long tail feathers. At any rate they were a beautiful sight against the snow. In Hustisford there is maybe a couple hundred yards of open water above the dam and is very slowly working it's way out towards the lake. I have been checking for ducks the past few days but nothing yet except for a few Canada geese.
