Prothonotary Warbler Nest Box Trail Early Results The next meeting of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club will be held on Thursday, February 17th at 7:00 p.m. in lower level of the Horicon Marsh International Education Center located north of Horicon of Hwy. 28. Featured speaker, Andy Paulios, will give a presentation on his work in implementing a Prothonotary Warbler nest box trail and tell us about some early results from the Lower Sugar River trail. Prothonotary Warblers are a species of greatest conservation need in Wisconsin and a Partners in Flight species of continental concern in the U.S.A. This warbler inhabits the swampy floodplain forests along Wisconsin’s larger river systems and spends its winters in coastal mangrove swamps in Central American and northern South America. Prothonotary Warbler populations have declined in the past century due to large-scale habitat loss both on the breeding grounds and in their wintering habitats. This species is our only eastern warbler that nests in cavities and readily accepts nest boxes. Andy will present the findings of a pilot effort to place nest boxes along the lower Sugar River in Rock County and will discuss the possibilities of expanding this effort to other suitable landscapes with the help of volunteers. Andy Paulios is the coordinator for the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative (WBCI) and works for the Wisconsin DNR. Andy graduated from Luther College with his BA and later got his MS from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Andy has loved birds and has been passionate about bird conservation since his grandmother first had him looking at backyard birds as a kindergartner. He currently lives in McFarland with his wife, two smaller birders and Buster the Boston Terrier. A question and answer session will follow along with refreshment.
