Hi all, I decided to make run up to Mauston in Juneau Co in hopes to see the Great Gray Owl that was just reported. I came across Cynthia B and Dan after I arrived to the general area it was reported. We split up for about 45 minutes or so before one in Dans group located the Great Gray Owl. We regrouped and watched the owl for the next few hours. It pretty much spent the time we watched it listening for I would assume voles under the snow from trees above. It did capture a vole at one point and had it eaten in just minutes. Another cool moment we observed was when the owl took flight off a tree limb about 20 feet off the ground. It did a vertical drop, and just floated slowly straight down to the ground. It had no wing action, but the wings were out and it was headed directly into the wind. We all just said wow! A new life bird for me, it made the day! Thanks to the first poster of the owl. I did get a few images to share, if you care to view them, use the link below. https://picasaweb.google.com/109038919513758014473/GreatGrayOwlMaustonWI2272013 Thanks and good birding!
