Picnic Point was surprisingly active this morning given the strong wind coming in off the lake. I had 31 species between 9:20 and 10:30. A surprise was 18 Double-crested Cormorants in four separate flocks fighting the wind while heading north low over the water. Duck diversity and numbers are down, but the lake is 90% open. Yesterday I was at the Union for the film festival and the lake looked like it was about ready to break up. Today huge piles of ice were crushed against the shore and Mendota was mostly open. A tiny bird flew across the trail and into Biocore Prairie. Pishing could not coax it out but it was probably a Yellow-rumped Warbler!
