A small but enthused group including one kid enjoyed the every 3rd Saturday of
the month Madison FUN partners co-sponsored Bird and Nature Outing at
Starkweather Creek. After filling the Nature Nook bird feeders at Goodman
Community Center the group headed over to Olbrich Botanical Gardens for a
Valentine Wander to look for birds in love. Bright red Northern Cardinals were
singing territorial songs from treetops and descended into nearby bushes
providing close up looks at male and female plumage. House Finches were also
singing lilting love songs nearby. Everyone helped search for tracks in the
crusty snow and discovered signs of bunnies nestled in shrubbery, multiple fox
trails around what may be a den area, and tracks of deer, squirrels, mice and
raccoon around the rain gardens bordering the Starkweather Creek bank. Several
more people joined the group at Olbrich Park afterward as we shared stories and
hot chocolate around a campfire.
