Hello, Today my Parents, Con & Me birded a section of the Northwoods from
Alvin (a mile north of Hwy 70 on Hwy 55) down Hwy 55, and west towards
Three Lakes on Pine River Rd/Sheltered Valley Rd.
We got 3 quality species today including Pine Grosbeaks,Evening Grosbeaks
and Red Crossbills.
In order our first birds were 5 Red Crossbills on a power wire a half mile
north of Mole Lake Casino on Hwy 55. Next we found a dead male Red
Crossbill on Hwy 55 between Pine River Rd & Fire Tower Rd. I have a pic of
that bird if anyone wants i would text it to their phone number. About a
half mile south of Hwy 70 we got close looks at 5 Red Crossbills gritting
on the road.
In Alvin we found 3 active feeders. The one on the east side of Hwy 55 on
the north edge of town had 2 dozen Evening Grosbeaks on the second pass we
made. The feeder up on the hill had 5 deer & Black Capped Chickadees only.
A feeder on the south edge of town at Hwy 55 & First Ave. (or 1st Street-
not sure on that) had 2 Red Crossbills, about 25 Evening Grosbeaks, Blue
Jays, and Red Breasted Nuts.
We swung down Pine River Rd next off of Hwy 55 (which turns into Sheltered
Valley Rd) and headed west. About 3 miles into it we got 5 Pine Grosbeaks
(one male) gritting on the road. Not at all skittish, and we drove to 10
yards from them. We picked up 10 more Pine Grosbeaks closer to what birders
call the Gray Jay bog. Again only one male. Those crazy birds actually
chased us as we backed up a hundred yards and when we stopped they were
above us in a white cedar. incredible. We found two more Pine Grosbeaks
even further west on Sheltered Valley.
We tried hard all day for Grouse, Boreal Chickadees, Gray Jays, Shrikes and
Black Backed Wood Peckers but whiffed on all those. They did not get any
snow where we were all day.
We saw a handful of Common Ravens on the day including two that seemed to
be courting high in the air and spinning in tight circles similar to
Eagles. We got a Barred Owl just south of New London on Hwy 45 about 5:15
p.m. and that was it. Lots of misses but what we get included some of the
best viewing of those species i have ever had.
So i wanted to get that out before i hit the rack tonight. Good Luck for
