The Super Bowl pregame didn't keep some dedicated birders and naturalists away
from a beautiful sunny 1st Sunday of the month Bird and Nature Outing at
Cherokee Marsh in the fresh snow. Master Naturalist Alex Singer shared nature
lore about tree sap and fingertip tastes of some Maple sap he had collected.
Many trees besides Maples, such as Birch, were also historically tapped by
Native Americans and by others - including Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers who
migrate north as sap starts rising! The snow was so fresh that we found few
tracks. School Naturalist Mary Binkley pointed out that some we thought were
small bird or mouse trails were actually made by leaves tumbling in the wind,
and sure enough we spotted one in action. A Red-tailed Hawk swooped past the
parking lot as we set out. Red-bellied Woodpeckers were the most vocal and
active birds along with a flock of Wild Turkeys foraging on the sunny south
slopes of the Cherokee North Mound where a small flock of Blue Jays also put on
a show. Quite a few people including a family and kids were out enjoying nature
recreation and joined the group for parts of the walk and hot chocolate
afterward.
