We had about 3 inches of new snow and the most birds ever in our backyard lake lot in Forest County Sat & Sun. FOYS were: 1 Northern Flicker 11 Fox Sparrows 2 Hermit Thrush 2 Mallard Ducks Redwing Blackbird (1 male and 1 female) Lake still 80% ice covered. I was hoping for it to thaw so I might see the first Common Loons of the year but not to be. At one time, we had over 60 individual birds in the feeder areas, the most ever for us. This is really the first winter we kept the feeders going all the time. We also set another record for Individual Species in our yard with a total of 23! We had almost 30 Dark Eyed Juncos and about 20 Pine Siskins in the yard with about 6 Am Tree Sparrows, plus our typical assortment of Black- capped Chickadees, nuthatches (Red and White- breasted), woodpeckers (Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied) the Pileated flew in at the end of the day to give us the 23 species), Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, American Robins, Mourning Doves, 3 Am Crows, a solitary Raven, Blue Jays, Purple Finches and Am Goldfinches and the birds above. We discovered two hermit thrushes, the first time we positively identified these birds- using our binoculars and field guides-, on a walk down to the lakefront. We are enjoying immensely our new birding activities and although I know others tally 100 species in a day and I love reading thru their lists; we are "happy as larks" with our improving abilties to find birds in our yard, identify them and enjoy watching them.
