I spent the morning checking on shorebirds in two Dodge county spots. The
first pond on the Auto Tour had a few Killdeer and Lesser Yellowlegs. Habitat
is slowly improving. The Old Marsh Rd pond had the best concentration of
shorebirds, better than on Monday. Best were 10 Am Golden Plovers that
actually flew over 49 as I was heading for the Auto Tour. They continued
heading south, not stopping at the Old Marsh pond. Also nice on this pond were
2 Semipalmated Plovers, a Baird's Sandpiper plus 8 other shorebird species.
40-50 Lesser Yellowlegs and Least Sandpipers, plus 30+ Killdeer were the
highest numbers.
As I worked my way across the marsh on 49 the Trumpeter Swan family was feeding
in the first pond on the east end. The seven cygnets certainly had grown since
I last so them. The family was feeding very close to the road in the early
morning and still around noon when I left the area.

The Shady Lane pond (south of Juneau) had 7 shorebird species with the best
being a Hudsoniam Godwit and a White-rumped Sandpiper. Many of the birds were
bathing. Also flying around on this small pond was a Black Tern.
