I headed to down to Richard Bong Recreation Area yesterday (2-4) to try for Short-eared Owls and I was not disappointed! On my way just a mile east of Bong, I noticed a few birds off in a field and pulled over. I soon discovered a mass of HORNED LARKS feeding on a stripe left by a track that turned up snow, grass, and dirt for them. I began estimating and my lowest estimation came in at 250!! Ebird flagged it as a high count but I really took my time and tried to do an honest job of estimating. I then carried on and after cruising the roads at Bong for half an hour, I found 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS hunting in a field with 4 NORTHERN HARRIERS at around 4:30. The owls were lifers for me and landed on posts several times, affording great views! They often chased the Harriers and I saw one owl catch a mouse and then swallow it. Also of note was a group of 25 COMMON REDPOLLS found in the same field earlier.
