Greetings all,
I feel bad and maybe even a bit guilty (why?) but the birds have remained as
always at our place on near East side of Sheboygan. We have some White-breasted
and at least one Red-breasted Nuthatches. I even convinced the Red-breasted to
take a couple of seeds from my hand! Lots of Goldfinches (especially since my
daughter got some Niger seed for us from Wild Birds Unlimited). Also many
Starlings, Chickadees, a few Cardinals, House, & Purple Finches, and Downy
Woodpeckers. Hope your feeders are full! Happy bird-feeding and watching to
all!

We, too, live in town; but we have only a fairly small lot, with a fence and
cedars and a big spruce at the far end of the backyard. Since we turned the
backyard into a total flower garden (no grass), we have had birds and bees
and butterflies galore. : ) We don't "clean" the garden in fall, and the
birds love to eat the dried seed heads throughout the winter. [And that way
the seeds get "spread" for more flowers. : ) ] The birds continue to
delight us throughout the winter... until this year. In late December a
Cooper's Hawk descended and actively hunted and terrorized our birds for two
days. It was kind of cool to see such a large and beautiful bird right
outside our window! BUT! Since then: no birds. ZERO birds! : ( We
moved the feeders (and there are 10 of them!) under the pergola by the back
door, so the hawk couldn't see the birds feeding there. Still no birds. :
( Even bought a heated bird bath (after years of daily pouring warm water
into the old bird bath). Still no birds. : ( Every day we sit by the
window, longing for our feathered friends to return... It's going to be a
loooooong winter without them. : ( Guess we'll have to drive to the
lakefront to see what's happening there... : )

Subject: [wisb] Where have my birds gone?
I live in town, so we do not have acres, only 2 lots, and have always (35
years) had a good number of birds at my feeders, except for now. In 2019,
we cut down 10 ash trees on our property, and in November 2020, the last 3
dead ash were cut. They were the tallest ones, but we did keep about 15-20
feet of our biggest -- only 2 limbs are left on it. We have hardly any
birds coming to our feeders anymore, and I have not added any birdseed in 2
weeks. Yesterday, we had 1 house finch, and today there was 1 downy
woodpecker. All the house sparrows from our brush pile have also
disappeared. I have seen a Cooper's Hawk in my backyard twice last week,
but we have always been visited by them. Any thoughts? Thank you in
advance for your answers.
