Greetings, Wisconsin Birding List! We here at the Aldo Leopold Foundation are very happy to be opening a new trail system this Saturday that will allow access to the Leopold-Pine Island Important Bird Area. To celebrate the opening of the trail system to the public, we are offering a free guided birding hike led by Mike Mossman at 7:00am this Saturday, August 18th. Mike is an ecologist for the Wisconsin DNR and has played a key role in surveying the birds on the Leopold-Pine Island Important Bird area. To join us on the hike, please RSVP to mailto:mail@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx so we know what kind of turnout to expect. We can also then send you directions on how to get here. We are located about 1 hour north of Madison and just about 15 minutes from Baraboo, Portage, and Wisconsin Dells. For interested birders, the trail system is now open for hikers to explore at their own pace also. Stop by anytime we are open and ask for a trail map to head out and explore! The Leopold Center is open to the public Monday-Saturday from 9am to 5pm from mid-April through the end of October. We also have Monday through Friday hours in the off-season. If you would like to visit for an early morning birding hike before we are open, we are happy to send a trail map and directions via email. We are still working on fabricating interpretive signage along the trail, but signs highlighting information about the natural history of the property (including the birds) should be installed by this fall. The new trail system was funded with grants from the Sauk County UW-Extension Arts & Culture Committee, the Natural Resources Foundation's Besadny Grant Program, and the Greater Sauk County Community Foundation.
