Yesterday, I arrived at Sheridan Park at around 7:45am and could not
believe how loud the birds were. The first thing I saw was at least four,
and then six Cape Mays in one flowering tree, different sexes and plumages.
Several Blackpolls were singing, as were the Cape Mays and multiple
Tennessee Warblers, Black-thorated Greens, redstarts, etc. Baltimore
Orioles were chasing each other around the park, an Indigo Bunting flew in
like a bat out of hell and bum rushed a feeder in someone's yard, four
catbirds fed together in the lawn...I wish I had recorded the birdsong. The
whole time I kept thinking about how lucky I was to see the birds
alive...with all of the obstacles they face on their journeys...
Today, I went to Wilson Park at around 4pm and it was extremely quiet,
almost like a fall birding day. None of the warblers, I mean NONE, were
singing, nor were any of the four vireo species I found. The flycatchers
were a bit more vocal. I had first of year Philadelphia Vireo and
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, plus some fun looks at a grosbeak and
Chestnu-sided drinking in the viaduct. Several Least Flycatchers and a
Wood-Peewee, a Gray-cheeked and several Swainson's Thrushes were present,
plus a half dozen Ruby-crowned Kinglets, one of which had an injured wing
but was managing well...for the time-being.
