Although the snow is deep and probably still covers 95% of the land's surface, I decided Saturday evening to try my favorite southern shrubby slope in the town of Saukville in Ozaukee County for woodcock. The location and the bird did not fail me. I first heard one flying and then twittering and about 5 minutes later heard the twittering flight again. I never heard one peent. My earliest record for woodcock at this location is March 1.
