After receiving a message about an American Avocet from a local birder that was traveling through Portage County early this afternoon, Mary Backus and I raced down to the spot and relocated the bird. It was seen in a flooded field on the south side of State Highway 49, about 1/2 mile west of Lake Helen, or about 2 1/2 to 3 miles west of Rosholt, WI. There was actually two flooded fields, one on each side of the highway, but the shorebirds were on the south side. The only other shorebirds present with the Avocet were about 15 Greater Yellowlegs. We park the car along Lake View Drive and walked in the ditch a little ways and had great views of this bird.
